Steps to When a Loved One Dies

If your loved one dies in a nursing home, hospital, or healthcare facility, notify the facility staff to contact us at Fitchett-Mann Funeral Services. 
 
If your loved one dies in a home, 
When hospice or home care is NOT involved, notify the police. They will come to the home to verify the death. Please ask them to contact our funeral home. 
 
When hospice or home health care is involved, notify the agency. They will come to the home to verify the death. Please ask them to contact our funeral home. 
 
If your loved one dies in another location, notify the police. The police officers will come to your location to verify the death. Please ask them to contact our funeral home. 
 
Now that the proper officials are notified: 

• Contact immediate family members and close friends.
• Plan arrangements to transport the body to the desired location.
• Consider organ donation.
• Arrange care for dependents and pets.
• Select an appropriate funeral, burial, or cremation provider to plan the ceremony. Fitchett-Mann Funeral Services accommodates all types of End-of-Life celebrations.
• Finish calls to close friends and the decedent’s employer.
• Identify a neighbor to watch over the decedent’s home (picking up mail, watering flowers, etc.)
• Settle the estate.
• Secure assets and other related tasks.
• Identify charities that honor your loved one’s legacy.
• Memorialize your loved one: Plant a tree or garden, participate in a charity run or walk, or make a memory item.
• Delete or memorialize your loved one’s social media accounts. 

When you are the primary care provider to your loved one and death occurs, remember to take time for yourself and ask other close family members for assistance.
