Chesapeake- William Samuel Woodard, Sr. was born on January 2, 1944, in Chesapeake (South Norfolk), Virginia, to the late Samuel Morris Woodard and Blanche Lee Woodard. William was the oldest of his siblings.

On August 16, 2026, William received his wings as one of God’s special angels descended early Sunday morning to escort him to his heavenly home—a special place prepared just for him.

“Sam,” as he was affectionately called, received his education at Carver High School. In 1962, he played basketball and became an area sensation, with his talent on the court still talked about to this very day.

Two years later, in 1964, Sam enlisted in the United States Army. After his discharge from the Army, he moved to Washington, D.C., where he worked as a clerk for the Washington Postal Service. His love for basketball continued throughout his life. He played while serving in the Army and later participated in the Post Office Basketball League.

Sam was a loving and devoted husband to his wife, Darleen Woodard. From their union, three sons and one daughter were born. He was a devoted father who possessed great wisdom and compassion.

Sam enjoyed playing checkers and was an avid fan of the Washington Redskins and Washington Wizards.

He leaves to cherish his loving memory his devoted wife, Darleen Woodard; three sons, William Samuel Woodard, Jr., Jason Lamont Woodard, and Michael Antwain Woodard; one daughter, Tamika Shanks; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and dear friends.
