Obituary

Chesapeake- On Friday; March 13, 2026, Nellie Betrella Moyler transitioned from her earthly tabernacle to her heavenly eternal home after a courageous battle with illnesses. She was surrounded by her loving family and friends in her final hours who will continue to honor her life and legacy.

Nellie was born January 10, 1954, to the late James Norman Sr. and the late Bertha Mae Cuffee Dudley in Norfolk County, VA (now Chesapeake). She grew up in the Longridge Cuffeetown area where she accepted Christ at a young age at Gabriel Chapel AME Zion Church. Her journey through education was marked by a pivotal moment in history; after attending Crestwood High School through the 11th grade, she became a part of the desegregation of Chesapeake Public Schools, proudly graduating from Great Bridge High School in 1972.

Nellie held a variety of positions in childcare and custodial, but her first love was always cooking. She completed some college, obtaining certifications in Culinary Management where she was a food supervisor at Camelot Elementary, Chesapeake Health, and Serenity Lodge as well as catering. Though her career was shortened by health challenges, her disability never dampened her spirit or stopped her from her passion, cooking.

Through cooking, Nellie paved her way into the hearts of everyone she encountered. You could not leave her house or her presence without her offering you a meal or teaching you how to cook! She expressed her love through her food and it could be tasted in every bite, especially her homemade rolls. In addition to cooking, Nellie had a warm vibrant personality, funny sense of humor, and a kind heart. She was always willing to help those in need, whether it was a meal, a place to stay, motherly love and guidance, or a laugh. Nellie was well loved by her community, Harbour North; she was the resident mom or auntie to all on her block. Everyone fondly called her "Ms. Nellie" or "Aunt Nellie."

Nellie was married briefly and through this union she had two children, Sabrina Cephus and the late Edward Lee Moyler, II. She was a faithful member of Jesus Church of Deliverance under the leadership of Bishop Lagus McCoy where she was an usher, a mother, and volunteered her cooking skills to many programs until she couldn't anymore.

She leaves to cherish her memories: her devoted daughter, Sabrina Cephus (Christopher) of Moyock, NC; sister, Evon Wilson, Atlanta, GA; brothers: John B. Dudley, Atlanta, GA and James Norman Jr; son/nephew, Benton Dudley (Ebone), Virginia Beach, VA; daughter/niece, Melissa Wilson, Atlanta, GA; daughter in law, Iesha Fletcher of Virginia Beach, VA and grandchildren: Brion Cephus, Charlotte, NC; Kayla Cephus, Moyock, NC; Alicia Parker, Fresno, CA; Alaietra Stewart, Norfolk, VA; Lauryn Moyler, Norfolk, VA; Victoria Haskins, Chesapeake, VA; Iyonna Moyler, Norfolk, VA; Nyemah Moyler, Virginia Beach, VA; Demarques Moyler, Virginia Beach, VA and numerous nieces, cousins, her grafted children of Harbour North, other relatives, and friends.
