Remembering Kenneth

Norfolk-On Thursday, July 16, 2026, the Lord welcomed Kenneth Edward Wood home to Eternal Rest. His wings were ready though our hearts were not. Charles E. Wood and Sarah M. Wood celebrated the birth of their first son, Kenneth, on November 12, 1961 in Portsmouth, Virginia. He was predeceased in death by his grandparents, Cleveland W. & Mary Wood, and Johnny R. & Bertha A. Mann.

Kenneth, affectionately known as “Kenny Wood”, was a graduate of Booker T. Washington High School in Norfolk, VA where he crafted his skills as an athletic letterman in basketball. He furthered his education at Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte, NC on a basketball scholarship. Despite the hurdles life resented recently, Kenneth found strength and never complained. His selflessness was evident in his focus to put the well-being of others “front and center”, before his own. Kenny’s greatest joy was attending sporting events with family and friends, namely the MEACC, CIAA, Pro Leagues, Golf Masters and supporting the athletic achievements of youth.

A talented basketball player and a natural leader, he approached life with the same energy, discipline, and heart that he brought to the court. Kenny faithfully attended the sporting events of his nephews and family members and kept his circle engaged and up to date with his ongoing social media posts. Kenny encouraged youth to “stay the course” and was willing to provide athletic and technical acumen, wisdom and encouragement to those who crossed his path and were willing to receive it. He looked forward to attending the annual Masters golf tournaments with Walter Woods, Jr., his “Cousin Poppy” and, was eager to vividly share those moments, play by play.

His outgoing and gregarious spirit and, signature infectious laugh created an impact on many that was unmatched. Kenny quickly made strangers friends and friends family. He never met a person he could not connect with, and his kindness, wisdom, and generosity touched countless lives that will be forever remembered. For many, he had a pure heart of gold. A trusted confidant and mentor to many, he freely shared his advice and encouragement, always seeking to uplift others and help them become the best versions of themselves. His love for family was unwavering, and he extended that same compassion and care to everyone fortunate enough to know him.

Kenny was humble, grateful for life and loved his family and friends unconditionally. The memorable experiences he shared with his family and friends, afforded him the tools to be a better version of himself. Kenny’s presence was a Godsend and though Heaven has gained an Earthly Angel, we are assured Kenny’s transition provided him comfort knowing he’d be in the presence of God.

Family and friends, mourn just for a while as Kenny Wood has gifted each of us with a lifetime of celebratory moments to enjoy in his memory. He leaves to cherish his memories, parents Charles E. Wood and Sarah M. Wood; siblings, M. Nannette Richardson and Anthony R. Wood (Evelyn); children, Narria Rice-Philpotts (Shane) and Earl Walker; grandson, Langston Rice; nephews: Sanmi Ogunjobi, Anthony Donnay-Wood, Elijah Wood and Malik Wood; and a host of extended relatives and friends.

There will be a homegoing service at 11am on Monday; July 27, 2026 at First Baptist Church of Norfolk; 418 E. Bute Street; Norfolk, VA  with a public viewing one hour prior to the service.  Cards, flowers, or other expressions of sympathy may be sent to 6349 Glenoak Dr.; Norfolk, VA 23513
