Obituary

Chesapeake-Gwendolyn Elaine Taylor Williams, born July 7, 1944, entered eternal rest on May 16, 2026. She was the beloved daughter of the late William Horace Taylor and Mary Magdeline Taylor Forrest.

Elaine’s early life was grounded in faith, family, and community. As a child, she was member of Jerusalem Baptist Church in Norfolk, Virginia, where she first developed the Christian foundation that would guide her throughout her life. Her faith shaped the way she loved, served, and uplifted others, becoming a defining thread woven through every chapter of her journey.

In 1967, Elaine married the late Charles Bertram Williams, and through this union she became a devoted member of Providence United Church of Christ. Their marriage was rooted in shared faith and purpose, and together they were blessed with one son, Eric Charles Williams, Sr.

Elaine was a proud graduate of Booker T. Washington High School (Class of 1962) and earned her bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from Norfolk State University in 1967. She went on to serve Norfolk Public Schools for 33 years, dedicating her life to educating, mentoring, and inspiring countless children. Known for her compassion, patience, and unwavering belief in the power of education, she touched generations of students who carried her influence far beyond the classroom.

Even after retirement, Elaine continued her commitment to literacy as a reading specialist in Norfolk, helping students strengthen their skills and confidence. Her love for learning and for helping others learn never faded.

Within her church family at Providence United Church of Christ, Elaine was a faithful and active member. She joyfully served in the Number 2 Choir and contributed her time and heart to the James A. Clark Scholarship Committee, supporting the educational dreams of young people. She also remained deeply connected to her alma mater through the Booker T. Washington High School Alumni Association, cherishing the community that shaped her early years.

Elaine’s life was defined by faith, service, education, and love. She had a steady presence, a nurturing spirit, and a guiding light to her family, students, church family, and friends. Her legacy lives on in the countless lives she touched and the values she instilled in others.

She leaves to cherish her memories her son, Eric Charles Williams, Sr.; her grandson, Eric Charles Williams, Jr.; Mrs. Valerie Mosby (Gregory) of Portsmouth, VA; Carol Monroe of Detroit, MI; Loving in-laws Reginald (Delores) Williams, Genevie Williams, LaVerne (Primus) Lawton & Cherita (Eric) Puryear. We extend a special thank you to the Nurses and Caregivers who gave special care to Elaine. Also special thanks to Diana Lynn, Valerie, and Melanie for your care.  Her life’s work stands as a testament to her belief that education, faith, and love are the foundations of a meaningful life.
