Norfolk- Ellis Eugene Blount was born on July 26, 1943 in Elizabeth City, NC. He was predeceased by his parents, Eva Mae Douglas (George) and Eugene Kirkland Spellman, Sr. (Lottie Mary). Ellis was also predeceased by his siblings, Ceddle Phillips, Regina Carter, Joyce Fuller, Tracey Davenport, Robert Brown, Johnnie Perrin, Roy Blount, William Brown, Wilford Spellman, David Spellman, Larry Spellman, Nellie Spellman Miles, and Micheal Spellman. Ellis attended the Elizabeth City Public Schools. As an adult, he began a long career as a Tree Surgeon for over 40 years.
It was nothing short of a blessing to know Ellis. He was a strong, straight forward, and no none-sense man. Ellis enjoyed traveling. His most favorite place to go was Las Vegas, Nevada. Ellis also loved to cook, throw parties, dance, laugh, and joke around with his family and friends. He TRULY loved spending time with his family and friends. Ellis was a proud uncle of numerous nieces and nephews. He also had a profound pride in his daughter's success as an educator. Ellis enjoyed giving advice and encouragement to his family throughout the years. He was best known for his many vibrant stories of past adventures as a young adult. Those stories will truly remain as a legacy of love and a memory in the hearts of his family members and all who had the honor to know him.
Ellis, 81, departed this life in the evening hours of March 13, 2025 with his family by his side. He was a resident of Chesapeake Health and Rehabilitation Center. This is the place where Ellis passed away peacefully, while the helpful staff showered him with love, dignity, and respect. Ellis is survived by his loyal and devoted daughter and son-in-law, Janae Ellis Blount-Stockton (Corrie) of Norfolk, Virginia. He was the eldest brother of numerous siblings. Eva Mae Douglas (maternal mother of Ellis), was the mother of thirteen children. Left to cherish precious memories among those siblings are two sisters: Angela Smith of Norfolk, Virginia and Dorothy Brown of Chesapeake, Virginia and his brother Larry Perrin (Pauline) of Norfolk, Virginia. Ellis also had a special relationship with his cousin, Sandra Phillips of Linden, New Jersey who was more like a sister.
Through the union of the late Eugene Kirkland Spellman, Sr. (fraternal father of Ellis) and Lottie Mary Spellman, Ellis had fifteen siblings. Among those siblings, there were four devoted to him, Stacey Spellman Sykes of Virginia Beach, Virginia, Elliott Lee Matthew Spellman of Elizabeth City, North Carolina, Linda Spellman Griffin of Elizabeth City, North Carolina and Eugene McKinley Spellman of Northern Virginia (Fairfax County).
Ellis was a proud grandfather (in-law) of Christopher Vanderbilt, Jasmine Reynolds, and Tyreese Vanderbilt, followed by one (bonus) great-granddaughter Seoni Reynolds. He will also continue to be loved and missed tremendously by a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, and friends.
