Edison Timothy
Hurdle
May 6, 1941 – August 26, 2025
Virginia Beach- Edison Timothy Hurdle passed away peacefully on August 26, 2025, at the age of 84. He was born on May 6, 1941, in North Carolina to the late Tassie (Felton) Hurdle and Charlie Roosevelt Hurdle.
Edison was born and raised in Saunders Grove Baptist Church, growing up in a deeply spiritual home. He loved the 23rd Psalm and instilled its meaning into his daughter, a lesson that remains with her always. Edison graduated in 1959 from Perquimans County Union School in Winfall, North Carolina. After graduation, he moved to Harlem, New York, where he pursued a career as a commercial over-the-road truck driver. He later transitioned into service work at East Elmhurst Hospital, where he was respected for his dedication and strong work ethic.
During Edison's time of being an over-the-road truck driver he met Diana Mason and gained two step daughters Bonnie and Chauntel Mason who Edison took on and loved as his own. One of Edison's greatest joys came later in life when he and Diana Mason gave birth to his beloved daughter, Nieema, always keeping her by his side. Later in life he moved to Virginia Beach with her and her fiancé, Leroy "Jr." Thompson. For more than ten years, Nieema lovingly cared for her father and now finds solace in knowing he is at peace. Edison especially adored and cherished his grandchildren: Marquis (Scoot), Sanai, and Janoy, who brought light to his final years.
Though he could be surly and argumentative at times his niece Leslie who he shared a strong and loving bond was always there to keep him in place. Edison's sharp wit and spirited nature were part of his charm. Beneath it all, he was fun-loving, giving, quick-witted, and very often brought laughter to those around him.
Known for his humor and sarcasm, Edison also had a generous heart and unwavering devotion to those he loved. A man of simple pleasures, he enjoyed working on cars and if the tv wasn't watching him he made sure to catch an episode of Judge Judy. While he was known as "Pops" by many, Edison had his own endearing name for loved ones, calling them "Boot." Most special of all, he lovingly called his niece Monique, "Boot." His spirit, quick wit, and love will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
Edison is survived by his beloved daughter, Nieema Hurdle of Virginia Beach; his grandchildren, Marquis, Sanai, and Janoy; his estranged wife, Diana Mason of New York; his brother, William Hurdle of Hertford, NC; his sister, Lois Holden of Hinesville, GA; his cousins; many nieces, nephews, and extended family.
