Cheapeake- On the afternoon of February 5th, 2024, Doris (Joyce) Parker-Wilson departed the earth to go to the Promise Land due to illness. Doris was known as Joyce to some in the South Hill area.
Doris was born in Norfolk County to the late Arthur Earl Parker and Malofia A. Lamb. She graduated from Norfolk County High School at the age of 17. She continued her studies at Virginia State later known as Virginia Union, the parent college to Norfolk State University from 1953-1954, shortly after she attended NSU and finished earning a degree in Sociology in 1955. After her studies, she worked for the city of South Norfolk in the recreational department. In 1957 she married her High School sweetheart Garland J. Wilson Sr. Doris was employed by the Bradley's department store and Lifetouch photography studios until retirement.
Doris loved spending time with family and friends and traveling abroad. She belonged to the following organizations: The Eastern Star and the Silver Strands Senior Club. In addition, she was an active member of New Mount Olive A.M.E Church, where she was a steward and Superintendent of Sunday School for many years. She was a member of the No. 2 Choir, Stewardess board, Women's Missionary Society, and Lay organization. Doris was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Garland J. Wilson Sr. Sheleaves to mourn her passing her brothers: A. Earl Parker (Jackie), Antonio (Larry) Parker, and sister Glendese Ramos. She also leaves to cherish her memory her children: Chardine Butler (Powell), Ravell Wilson (Edward), Garland J. Wilson Jr. (Bridgette), Lorene Wilson, and Kenya Wilson. Six grandchildren: Pechawn Wilson, Garlando Wilson, Mattishsta Wilson (Emmitt), Chanacy Butler, Imani Small, and Jaay Small. Godson: Kenneth Gray and a host ofnieces, nephews, family, and friends.
Doris was truly a powerful god-fearing woman, was very family-oriented, had a heart of gold, and will always be remembered in our hearts.
A funeral service will take place 12pm Monday; February 12, 2024 at New Mount Olive AME Church; 1953 Campostella Road; Chesapeake, VA. Visitation will be held Sunday; February 11, 2024 from 2-4pm.
