Callie Elizabeth
Hassell
June 5, 1937 – November 13, 2025
Norfolk-Callie Elizabeth Elizabeth Hassell, known by many as "Miss Callie," passed away peacefully on Thursday; November 13, 2025, at the age of 88. Born on June 5, 1937 in Robersonville, North Carolina, Callie was the youngest of three children born to her mother, Lillian Hassell. She was raised by her grandmother, Hannah Hassell.
After Hannah's passing, Callie's oldest brother, James "Jimmy" Hassell, became the primary caregiver for Callie and their brother, Wilbert Hassell. Though life brought the family many losses—Wilbert passed on May 21, 1985, and James on December 2, 2023—Callie carried their memories forward with love and devotion.
Callie attended Robersonville Colored Grade School in her younger years and later moved to Norfolk, Virginia, where she had two beautiful children—her son, the late Michael Hassell, and her daughter, Diane Rabb. She spent many years working in the food service industry and eventually retired from Brosies.
After retiring, she enjoyed spending time with her family and friends—cherishing laughter, celebrations, and quiet moments of togetherness. In her free time, Callie enjoyed relaxing at home and watching her favorite court shows—especially Judge Mathis. She also loved Bobby Jones Gospel and other uplifting gospel programs that brought her joy.
Callie was the heart of her family. Her guidance and love brought everyone closer, and her presence created a bond that will continue for generations.
She leaves to cherish her memory her daughter, Diane Rabb; her daughter-in-law, Teresa Hassell (wife of the late Michael Hassell); her grandchildren: Terrel Hairston, Keshia Hassell (Doug), Terrance Hassell (Brooke), Omar Barnhill, and Deanna Harris (Aaron); eight great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends who loved her dearly. Callie's legacy is one of love, strength, and unity. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
