Obituary

Chesapeake-Bertie Williams Crudup affectionately known to her family and friends as "Bert", "Aunt Bert", "Meme" and "Ganny" was called home on September 30,2025 after a long and courageous battle. She was not alone and was surrounded by her daughter, granddaughter and loved one Truly Conner. Bertie was born alongside her twin brother Burleigh on October 15, 1942 in Nassawadox , Virginia to the late Roberta and Horace Williams.

Bertie was educated in Northampton County Public Schools and worked as a field laborer. In 1965 she met and married George Allen Crudup, after 7 years they went their separate ways.  As Bertie's niece/sister Ella Mae Thomas White's health started to decline she knew she needed
someone to raise her children. She asked her Aunt Bert to assist and without hesitation Bertie loved and raised those children as her own. After raising her great-nieces and nephews God blessed her with a daughter named Vivian.

On October 10, 1982 Bertie accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior and joined Bethel Baptist Church in Franktown, Va under Reverend Charles Balark. To know her, was to love her! She was a loving mother, grandmother, and aunt who illuminated everyone's life that she was a part. Bertie loved to cook and was famous for her chicken and dumplings! When her tv was on, it was to watch soap operas (Days of our Lives), westerns or wrestling. As a side note, when she was watching wrestling her grandson KeShawn was right by her side doing all the wrestling moves and when her grandson Dai'yon was born she did the same with him. To keep her mind sharp, she also found time to do crossword puzzles.

Deciding it was time for a change, in 2016 Bertie moved to Chesapeake, Va to be closer to her daughter Vivian and joined Herald of His Coming
Ministry on February 7, 2017 then under the leadership of Dr. Ronald Sewell Sr, but currently under the leadership of Pastor Donald Sewell where she served faithfully on the Mother's Board until her health started to decline. Living in Chesapeake, she befriended Vernice "Irene" who was just like a sister.  You could catch them sitting outside joking and talking.

Bertie was preceded in death by great niece and nephew, Ella Mae and John Thomas White Jr., who she raised as her own; 7 brothers: Lilton, Harvey, Horace, Alonzo, Russell Sr, Roosevelt, and her twin Burleigh Williams; 4 sisters: Alice Virginia Williams Thomas, Mary Lathan, Rose Emma James; 1 great niece Barbara White; 1 Grandson Ronyell Coston; and a son-in-law Raymond Parker.
